Organized by the Mozilla Campus Club of Uva Wellassa University Sri Lanka, Codezilla, the open source product development inter university hackathon was concluded on 16th of June 2018. The main objective behind Codezilla was to identify and get to know about the enthusiasts who say yes to FOSS.
How CodeZilla was started?
Codezilla was an open source product development inter university hackathon where the participants were given the chance to get themselves registered and after a thorough consideration of their contribution made at github , contestants were shortlisted to a 50. This was a challenging task for everyone where 250 registered contestants were trying to save their spot for the second round.
At the second round, the selected 50 constants were able to select their project and carry on with the coding of the relevant project for 2 weeks.
The final projects were judged by a team of technological experts.
The most awaited moment; The awarding ceremony of CodeZilla 2018
Codezilla, the awarding ceremony unveiled by welcoming all to the event and acknowledging the crowd about the roots of Mozilla Story.
Shalitha Suranga, the Founder of Mozilla Campus Club, UWU spoke about how Codezilla 2018 came alive and how developing open source projects enhances the value and supports the community. He also explained how lucky he felt as a budding Mozilla campus club in Uva Wellassa University to take initiative in making Codezilla 2018 a reality.
This inspirational speech was followed by the two other speeches by Ruwan Ranganath , Deveops at WSO2 Telco and Chamantha de Silva, Tech Lead at Sysco LABS.
Ruwan Ranganath gave a speech on FOSS.LK is back and Chamantha de Silva inspired the crowd with his speech on JARVIS lives everywhere.
Then participants were excited to know how far their projects had gone. First the participants received certificates of participation and the most awaited moment arrived.
First the top 7 projects were selected where they received valuable certificates and gifts.
Sandun Isuru Niraj of University of Moratuwa (UoM) won the 10th place while Namila Bandara of University of Peradeniya (UoP) secured his place at 9th. Dhanuka Perera of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), Nirosh Ubeysingh of National School of Business Management (NSBM) , Chashika Jayashan Weerathunga of University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC), Erandra Jayasundara and Dilusha Dasanayaka of University of Kelaniya (UoK) walked away with 8th,7th,6th 5th and 4th places respectively.
Then the participants were eagerly waiting to know the first, second and third places. Kekayan Nanthakumar of University of Kelaniya (UoK) was awarded the second runner up at Codezilla 2018 while Kasun Chinthaka Piyarathna of University of Moratuwa (UoM) was awarded the first runner up.
The first place was claimed by Oshan Mudannayake of University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) at Codezilla 2018, the inter university open source product development hackathon.
Finally the day came to a conclusion with vote of thanks by Isuru Edirisinghe, Club Captain of Mozilla Campus Club, UWU.
The event was a success which was proved with the smiles and comments of the contestants. Codezilla 2018 reached the top of the mountain with immense strength and courage of Mozilla Campus Club members who worked day and night in making this event a reality.
