FOSSSchool

FOSSSchool is aimed at educating school children and university students on the benefits of Free and Open Source Software. It is a half day program for each group held on the 14th of August at the University of Moratuwa. There will be talks on all aspects of free and open source software ranging from content management, graphics tools and how open source development is the way to go! The event is free for students and the expected attendance for both the sessions is 300.

ApacheCon Asia 2006

For the first time ApacheCon the premier conference of the Apache Software Foundation will be held in Asia and Sri Lanka has been given the honor of hosting this prestigious event. Held from the 14th to the 17th of August it creates a unique platform for the open source community to come together to gain deep insight into techniques and methodologies critical to the advancement of open source software, and gain skills to optimize the power and versatility of Apache software.

The conference brings together ASF members, developers, contributors and users working with Apache and related software, to participate in a leading-edge forum to exchange ideas and network with peers. The first two days of the conference is dedicated to talks and presentations. This is followed by a day of intensive half-day tutorials, which will offer actionable techniques and methodologies pivotal to the increasing demand for open source software. Througout the conference there will be an on-going “hackathon”, which is an opportunity for the geographically dispersed Apache developer community to do some interactive “hacking”.

ApacheCon Asia will held be at the Trans Asia Hotel and with an expected attendance of 350 which also include foreign delegates from the region.

FOSSEnterprise

This is a one-day conference focused on the public and private sector CIO/CTO community to educate about the benefits of FOSS. Several globally renowned speakers are expected to attend and talk on topics that directly relate to business communities and how FOSS can play a big role in day to day lives. This high level conference at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel with an expected attendance of 100.

The FOSSSL 2006 event plan is designed to touch the entire spectrum of the IT community: students, practitioners and decision makers. The speakers of the events will be unparalleled and world-class in every way. The hosting of the first Asian ApacheCon event will be a globally visible event for Sri Lanka and we expect it to be a tremendous success.
